Welcome Dino The Albino Squirrel.

We at Croydon Disc Golf would like to share this photo of Dino The Albino with the world. This wonderful aberration of the animal kingdom is just one of the many cool residents that Lloyd Park has. This shot was taken by Matt on 28th Nov 07 and as far as we know is the only photographic record of our new mascot.

The British Nationals

Derek Robins confirmed his status as Britain’s #1, with a dominant display to win the National Matchplay Championship, held this year over the permanent public course at Lloyd Park, Croydon, on the weekend of 20/21 October.

TD Richard Wood has posted his own report...

ROCKIN` ROBINS TAKES THE `07 NATIONALS. by TD Richard Wood
Croydon Disc Golf Clubs` Lloyd Park was the venue for this years British Nationals. After what seemed like an age, preparations were complete and the course, marquee, catering, accommodation and Gala Dinner were all sorted.

The relief came at around 0930 Saturday 20th October when, with everyone present and correct, play started. The Top 16 Match play format was the first time for me. I fell foul of the tactics on my 10th hole of my first round tie with Charlie Mead. My stupidity when shoot OB on the tight 16th effectively ended my challenge and I could not upset the rankings! Most of the first round matches went to the higher seeds and it wasn't till the second round that we had our first shock. Jester went out to Matt Cutler in that second round, Matt then went onto to perform excellently and subsequently beat Bruce in the Semis with a fantastic run of four deuces on the last 4 holes. Matt went onto give Del a run for his money in the Final but it was Derek who triumphed 3 up and took the trophy. Dels win makes it a double as he was already crowned Open Champion at the Prize Giving Ceremony on the Saturday night.

The Not The Top 16 was played in three section; 26 players competed over the Saturday, Sunday and Weekend. The winner of each prize turned out to be an American golfer called Scott Holter. Scott is a fantastic player as his 936 PDGA rating shows. His 4 round total of 25 under par was stunning. His third round set the course record which is now 47: 8 under. Scott, far from being a insular golfer was keen to pass on his knowledge to all and sundry and I was especially happy to send Croydons newest golfer, Duke of Edinburgh participant Gabby Bush, out with him. She learnt a great deal (and also from Sophie) and took the Most improvement award, taking 18 shots off her Saturday score. We are all very proud of her achievement here at Croydon. Scott also took one of the CTP prizes. Others were won by Andy Gee (yeeha...another Croydon Winner!) and Chris O'Brien.

The evening meal was held at the Spread Eagle Pub in quaint Ol` Croydon Town. The pie and beer seemed to go down pretty well and everyone could see the wall mounted TV and therefore the World Cup Rugby Final loss to South Africa. I organised the final ok but I just couldn't gee the lads up enough to produce a win! I think the "no queue" bar went down quite well!
The catering for the two days at the course was provided by the local Cub Scouts lead by their Leader A.J. The cubs lent us the marquee and the equipment and he and a couple of his charges came and did the catering. They were fantastic, the hot soup served was spot on and the tea at the end of the round very welcome.

We have a very good relationship with the Cubs as we raised enough money at the Worlds Biggest Event to buy them a Portable basket and 20 discs. This relationship will continue with mutual help at their scout camps and their duplicated help at next years tour event... A massive thanks to A.J and the boys. Finally a thank you to all the local guys and lasses who helped me to prepare the weekend. TDs only will understand the mental pressure of organising your first tournament and their help kept me sane! Also thanks to Jester Bruce and Del for answering stupid questions and to Nige at DISCZOO.COM for donating the spot prizes. Thanks also go to everyone who turned out to play and make this TD a very happy bunny indeed

The Baskets Have Landed!!!

On Monday the 19th of December Dennis and Rodger, the council contractors, and two great lads  got to Lloyd park at around 0830 to start putting in holes for the baskets and the tee markers. They were armed with a large hole digging thing like an enormous drill and a map of where everything was. The map was crap and they spent quite a lot of time wondering around looking for red a yellow paint on the floor as we had agreed to mark the ground. Richard and Charlie shot up there at lunch time to show them where things where. You can imagine the surprise when it was discovered that all bat a few holes where done and several of the sleeves where already concreted in. a quick trip round the park and we'd sorted all the lost markings and they had dug the extra wholes before the lunch hour was out.

Dennis   --   Rodger

The next day an all day visit was planned. "Pah!" said Dennis, We'll be done in a couple of hours. well we split up into to two groups, Rich showing roger where the tees went in and Charlie and Dennis following round with marker posts and dry-ish mix concrete. Well at 1130 we sunk the last tee marker in and Dennis looked triumphant. Two hours almost to the minute.

24 hours to let the dry mix concrete soak up some moisture (something which was plentiful on Wednesday night) and Richard was at the park again on Thursday the 23rd of February, assembling and locking in the baskets in place.

So in the middle of a wet Thursday afternoon in a deserted muddy park in Croydon a wonderful thing happened. Croydon Disc Golf hit the seen with a bang with lovely shiny new baskets in a course that is a joy to play in a beautiful setting.

We hope to see you there soon. Check the forum for regular games!!!

A big thank you goes out to Fernando and Discology, Alan at Croydon Council, Dennis and Rodger the council contractors, Bruce and Jester for their course design help and the lads that play every week. We hope to host a round or two before the British Open if anyone would like to come and Christen the course and get a little basket practice.

CDGC Receives lottery grant for basketed course.

It is with enormous joy and pride that Croydon Disc Golf Club announces we have been awarded a grant by the Awards 4 All organization (a lottery grant) to the value of £6700 which will enable us to place a fully basketed course on Lloyd Park in the Croydon borough of London permission from the local authority to place baskets on Lloyd park was granted earlier this year but we had no funding.

This will make us the UK's first public disc golf course and the only basketed disc golf course course in London. It will be free to play and all are welcome. We hope that the presence of baskets in such a public place will generate curiosity which can only be good for the sport in general and especially good for our club. Once the baskets (pictured right are in place we hope to be to host BDGA tournaments and raise the profile of the club and the sport even further.

There will be 18 baskets with 22 positions (4 baskets with alternative positions) mainly based upon the tree target course we currently play.

THANKS TO RICHARD WOOD, OUR CHAIRPERSON, FOR HIS ENORMOUS AMOUNT OF WORK AND TENACITY WHICH BROUGHT THIS SITUATION ABOUT.

WELL DONE.

2006 Winter Doubles

Saturday November 18th 2006 was the date for this years Winter doubles tournament hosted by CDGC on Lloyd park. An amazing turn out was seen with 24 arriving from all over the country. It was a beautiful day, not to cold and no rain although the ground was a little wet but nothing a pair of decent water proof shoes wouldn't hold off.

The day started with Croydon members franticly painting tee markers, placing tape on trees and placing the 10 portable baskets that had been brought along by various players (thanks all). This is an occupational hazard because we can't setup the day before as we are on public land, (now we have been awarded a grant and permission for a permanent course this will never happen again....Yippee!!!).

Two rounds of best disc doubles were played with players starting at different points in groups of four, or two doubles teams. In best disc games both players in a team tee off and then both players play from the best disc until the whole is finished). Each team had an experienced player and a relative newbie.

After the first round a nice hot soup was served up at the nearby Coombe Lodge pub and restaurant, (and very nice it was too). Then on to the second round.

The results were as follows:-

Jerry & Fernando /Rick & Chris     -    Joint 1st - 94 shots for 36 holes

Bruce and Jarvis/ Josh and Fernando1     -     Joint 3rd - 99 shots for 36 holes

We hadn't prepared for a joint first and only had two trophy's (beautifully made and supplied to us by Ted Farrow. www.TedFarrow.co.uk THANKS TED!) so it was agreed that the beginners in each team would take them home. Prizes were awarded in the car park at Coombe lodge.

(Jerry doing his best Mr. McGoo impersonation for some reason)

Jerry & Fernando                                           Rick & Chris
