I know this is annoying but can't we change registration to someone emailing rather than automation, or at least have someone approve the membership first.

We tried that, but they just get the authorisation and then post their cr*p anyway. Just as easy to delete the user as they show. We used to have an easy mod that got rid of them but that isn't possible on this version.... i think.

Automated Bots cannot get on, its actual paid people who put em up... annoying but manageable.

We don't get em on the BDGA site though. The mod we use asks you a Disc golf related question when registering, so keeps away the riff raff

What I mean is that one of us should approve the registration. All these spammers have all got spammer looking logins

Just a quick note to say that Charlie just moved house so wont be able to sort the logins for a little while.... he's still looking for his computer!

I realise Charlie can't do anything about it at the moment, but who can delete spam accounts?

I can delete their posts, but they'll obviously just come back, so sometimes I figure it's best to leave them until someone who can delete the user sees them...

I am online most of the time now, so they shouldn't be visable for long anyway.

The bot's are a pain, I was working with Richard a while back on a few ways to stop them. I stopped a lot just by disallowing members from time zone -12 where most of the bots are programmed to come from but it didn't stop them all. At that time I was looking into various mods but the PHBB site was down that day and I never got back on to it due to extreme work overload which I'm still having really.

We get some manual spam form a world of warcraft site which is impossible to block without making the signups manually vetted. I did think about signing up to their forum and posting links to us but actually links in forums are bad sor SEO in the medium and long term and I also don't want to start a tit for tat war with them.

If mods could delete posts as soon as they see them I would appreciate it, no need to leave them there as it doesn't make deleting the accounts any easier.

I intend to get the contextual question thing going again but I am a month behind on web dev work at the mo and struggling to justify time spent on anything else, coupled with moving house as well as moving data centre.

Cheers
Charlie

Thanks for the update Charlie, I'll go back to deleting the <expletive deleted> when I spot them

Cheers Bruce, and anyone else who has been deleting away! It all helps while I'm catching up. If anyone would like to volunteer to be a mod please let Richard know. No good PMing me etc as I don't look at the forum anywhere near as often as I would like. Richard please call me if anyone responds to this and ask me to do it there and then otherwise it will end up at the bottom of a pile it is never likely to surface from.

ultiali, I have nade you a mod. You can now edit any post, not just your own, as well as deleting (a small button with an X on it). Please edit anyting politically dubious, even mild swearing and the like and please just delete spam or any extreme posts which are beyond a simple edit.

Further to Charlies point, I have started a thread on the phpbb board to try and find a mod that will give us a simple "X" against the name in the members area. We used to have this in a previous addition of the software but not at the moment. Once found it should be very straight forward to delete unwanted members and their posts with one click.

good thinking Rich.... But, the reason no one had bothered to port that mod from V2 to V3 of PHPBB when I last looked is that PHPBB3 has almost the same feature built in to the admin control pannel. I agree that it wold be much more useful to be visible to mods and admin in the actual board so if someone has now ported it or reworked it from scratch point me to it and I'll implement it.

Cheers Rich!
