Disk golf with the world champs
Current world disk golf champions, brother and sister Avery and Valarie Jenkins, and former champion Nate Doss will be the star players at this year’s Croydon Cyclone tournament in Lloyd Park. The tournament is the 8th leg of the British Disk Golf Association British tour, and takes place over the weekend of the 5th and 6th Sept.
As well as taking part in the tournament – which caters for 72 players who will be coming to Croydon from all around the country – Avery, Valarie and Nate will also be providing some demonstration lessons for anyone interested in taking up the sport or honing their skills.
Disk golf is enjoying a rise in popularity thanks in some part to its inclusion in computer games such as Nintendo Wii Beach Sports and Tiger Woods PGA golf – and a recent survey of 11-19 year olds showed that this was a sport that would be likely to encourage them to get more active and use their local parks.
Croydon’s Lloyd Park course is unique in the UK, being the only one that is free to play and open to all at all times. As a result it is being used as a model to try and build more facilities in parks across the UK.
Richard Wood, chairman of the Croydon club said, “Disk golf is a fantastic sport that anyone can get involved in. It’s cheap to get started – you only need three disks – and once you have given it a try you’ll soon be hooked.â€
