I am terrified!

The handicaps are worked out by taking the 3 scores, adding them together and then dividing them by 3 then taking away par. This gives the full handicap... we are using 2/3 s of that.

So: 65+65+61 = 191 / 3 = 63.66 - 57 = 6.66

6.66 / 3 x 2 = 4.44 rounded down to 4

Hey Rich

We are actually doing 100% handicaps. Sorry for the confusion, it's my fault for getting back to front what we did last year when I though we started with 100% and then changed to 2/3 to make it fairer. However it was the opposite, we started with 2/3 and changed to 100%!

See this thread for the explanation www.croydondiscgolf.com/disc-golf-forum/...andicaps-for-sl.html

...some rounding errors going on there: excuse me coming on all science-teacher-y, but you're rounding the handicaps to whole numbers but the round averages to 2-decimal-places, which means some people lose out by 0.33 and some people gain 0.33...

Doesn't sound like much, but could be the difference between winning and losing!

i will be using more decimal points in the future ... the rounding up/down is beyond my maths so i open that one up to Jester... who seems to know what he's doing!

Well basically at this point after 3 rounds, everyone should be on exactly the same score: 57. They won't thank me for this, but shouldn't Jester and Dan get negative handicaps...?

Not everyone should have a handicap yet, for example there may have been three rounds but I've only played at two of them.

It makes sense that the handicap asigned after playing three rounds should make your average score exactly 57, and yes this does mean the players shooting under par will be playing off a misus figure which means they have to add shots on.

Rich, not sure how Paul's spreadsheet works things out, but for eample if my third summer league round is a 55, I'll have shot 57, 49, 55 which totals 159.

159 / 3 = 53

53 - 57 (par)= -4

This is obv nice and tidy. Tom, how does this not work if for example my third round is a 54 and we get into decimals?

Sorry, didn't notice you only had two rounds.

If you look at the table as Rich currently has it, there's a bunch of people at 56.67 and another bunch of people at 57.33, when they should all have exactly 57.

Basically it's because the handicaps have been rounded to whole numbers:

The people who are on 56.67 have had their handicaps rounded up to a whole number from one that should have ended .67. For example, someone who shot a total of 176 over three rounds has an average score of 58.67, and therefore a handicap of 1.67, which has been rounded up to 2 and taken away, leaving 56.67.

Conversely, the people who are on 57.33 have had their handicaps rounded down from one that should end 0.33. Here if someone totalled, say 178 over three rounds they have an average of 59.33 which gives a handicap of 2.33, but that's been rounded down to 2, leaving 57.33 once the h'cap is used.

i.e. it's just unlucky at the moment which one you end up with! The problem will be solved if you use a consistent system i.e. 2.d.p for both.

i have no idea how the rounding up and down works.

We have to have decimal points, and probably more than 2 as the scores are going to be very tight, especially as we are only counting 5 rounds!

Jester will be having a negative handicap... although I have just read an article saying that it may be better to have the handicap based on the course record rather than par.

Not sure it makes any difference - either way you're just picking a fixed point and seeing how everyone does relative to how well they started...

If our handicaps stopped at zero the system would favour the better players. As we have minus handicaps for people who play under par it all evens out.

Playing to a course record (say 47) rather than course par of 57 would mere mean everyone got a positive handicap.

Can't see this making any difference so should be left as is.
