Jester and Sam - Champions.
Quarry Park Open 2011 What a fantastic weekend for CDGC.
38 players pitched up for this summers QP Open run by Jessy Denny up at the Leamington Spa course.
There was a
strong turnout by the CDGC; Jester, Bruce Dan, Oz Friere and Rich W in
the Open. Ali, Ozzy Dan, Terry in the AD Am. In the Int Ams Sam and
Neil M were joined by Tour newbies, Ben Cairns, Liam Fisk and James
Burton. Rich O was unfortunately taken ill on the Friday and was unable
to play.
The weather held
out for us. The rain on Friday only really hampered the erection of the
Taj Mahal and in the event a record breaking time of 27 minutes was
recorded (nearly 20 minutes faster than previously achieved). Saturday
was hot, steamy and had some wind to play with plastic. Sunday was very
warm, 29 degrees evidently. It made for a tough time for the more
rotund but both Dans were in their element.

Glee Cast Visit Lloyd Park
Mark Salling (Puck) and Corey Monteith (Finn), cast members of the TV Show, Glee visited Lloyd Park to play disc golf as part of their Glee/Disc Golf Tour. Mark tweeted that they had played there on Friday but seemed surprised that no one was around! A lot of the Croydon players were making the journey up to Quarry Park for the QP Open and being a school day, I guess its not surprising that no one was around. They both seemed to have enjoyed themselves and used "gorgeous" as the term to describe the park. We at the club are delighted that they had a good time. Mark posted a short video from which a couple of screen shots have been used below. The shot is around the basket of 5 and looks as if an OB was taken!!!
Visiting Ace
Mike Toomes, visiting CGDC from Rayleigh, North Carolina smashed in an ace on hole 8 on Saturday morning. Mike borrowed some plastic off a number of the club players Saturday morning and was on his first round at the course. The ace was struck with a Yellow Roc that had just been found at the basket of 7 that belongs to Charlie. Mike then tonked the Roc at a basket he hadnt seen and took a massive mac off high off the tree on the left of the basket. It crashed into the basket for the 3rd ace in the last 3 weeks. The disc has been signed before being reyurned to its owner!
Ali Findlay - Croydon Cup Champion
The Royal Wedding day of Friday 29th April 2011saw the rather late 2010 Croydon Cup. It was a fantastic days golf in nice golfing conditions. The weather was dry, warm and a litte windy. We tried new holes that were a great success, we used a new handicap system and we crowned a new champion. Ali Findlay is The 2010 CDGC Croydon Cup Champion.
Croydon Cup - by Ali Findlay Royal Wedding day saw 19 men get as far as possible from the wall to
wall coverage and take part in the 3rd? Croydon Cup. I emerged
victorious over two rounds and while my handicap was maybe on
the generous side the fact that there was 15 players over 10
shots showed that Sam had done a pretty good job.
My first round started poorly
with two bogeys in the first 3 holes but got a drop in 3 on 13
and managed to make a good par save on 14 from under the 3rd
mando tree. Bogeys followed on 16, 18 and 1 but got one back on
2 and negotiated the new holes in 3's. Also managed a 3 on the
6th. With 3 holes to go I thought I was eyeing up a 60 but a
par on 7 and then silly bogeys on 8 and 9 gave me a 64 (net
56). That put me on the second card with Fran, Neil and James
B. The top card lead by Oz with a net 52 followed by the Woods and Terry
T.
Lunch
followed with discussions of the new holes and the other changes that
would need to be made to the course. Seemed pretty universal
consensus that they would improve the course, but sure the
discussion will flow to make them the best we can.
My second round started very
well, parking 14 and while i lost one at 15 I got a rare 2 on
16. I thought things were going to get even better when got with 15
feet of the basket with my drive on 18. 3 putts later my round
didn't seem as rosy, but following that I played some very
solid par golf only dropping one shot on the second new hole.
That gave me a 59 (net 51) and put me on 107. Neil in our group
had had a pretty solid round and ended up on 62 (net 52) to end
up on 108. Fran round was a tale of two halves with a disatrous first 9 but
hit 4 birides on the way back. James couldn't quite repliacte
his morning round. The top group also couldn't match their
morning rounds which allowed myself and Neil to push through
and take the first and second positions.
I'm very proud of winning the
Croydon Cup which will take a place on our mantle! Reckon my
handicap will take a pasting but that the way its meant to
work!!
The final scoring grid is as follows. Thanks to all of the 19 strong field for making the day a great success.
Easter Saturday '11 Aces
Saturday 23rd March 2011. 2 Aces!

BDGA Tour event 4: Essex - the land of the white stiletto
Dave Allaker and his team hosted
the fourth stop on the BDGA tour on the weekend of 16th and 17th April, at the
relatively local University of Essex course, in Colchester. Dave, TD Of The Year
2010, always puts on a fantastic event at the Uni and the added benefit of
sponsorship from Gateway Discs meant players’ packs included a disc for
everybody and a further 30 prizes up for grabs over the weekend. CDGC were
determined to get their hands on these prizes and in total 12 Croydonites headed
up the A12 to sample some of Essex’s finest.
After his victory in the
Adv Ams at last year’s Essex event, CDGC’s Chairman was our lone representative
in the Open division; tour stalwarts Jester Wilson and Bruce Webber unable to
make it this year and recent winner Dan Ryan off celebrating his birthday. The
Adv Ams formed the largest part of the field and CDGC were well-represented by
“Ozzy” Dan Pommer, Ali Findley, Terry Tenger, Stew Gudgeon, Phil Wood and 2010
Int Am champ Tom Lowes. Vying for competition in the Int Ams was Mr and Master
Bates – Paul and James, Neil Martin, Sam Stevens and “Hippy” Dan Hawkins.

Dan Ryan, CDGC, Takes Burnlaw Title
Burnlaw Snowbow – California Dreaming for Croydon Flat Caps! (Or, Not Enough Caddies (Again!)) by Phil Wood (marked and edited by our red pen owning teacher, Tom Lowes!)
BDGA Tour event three saw the players of CDGC head North to Burnlaw, in
the hills of Northumbria. Six hardy souls headed the 300+ miles in the
pursuit of the Burnlaw Dove. Sam Stevens, Tom Lowes and Dan Ryan were
making their first visits to Garry Villiers-Stuart’s farm though Jester
Wilson, Bruce Webber and Phil Wood were more familiar with the
surroundings.

A strong field turned out for the event with well over 30 competitors
there to chance their arms. The usually frosty and windy Burnlaw gave
way to early spring warmth and almost zero wind. In these clement
conditions the players thrived. Burnlaw local Chris O’Brien shot an
incredible 10 under par 47 to set the early pace in the open division,
QP’s Jon Tweed hit a 54 to lead the Adv Ams (forcing Del Robins back
onto the third card for the afternoon’s round, much to the amusement of
all except Del) and Edinburgh’s Chris Gill hit a 61 to head up the Int
Am.

Spring Fling 11 - Quarry Park - BDGA Tour Event #2
By Phil Wood
BDGA tour event number 2, saw the disc golfers
of England, joined by a few Yanks, descend upon the Quarry Park for the
Spring Fling. CDGC were again well represented at the weekend with Bruce
Webber, Dan ‘LankyYankee’ Ryan join the chairman – Rich Wood in the
Open division. In the Ad Am division Phil Wood was joined by Terry
Tenger. In the Int Ams CDGC were represented by summer league champ
Francis Wilson, Dan ’Hippy’ Hawkins and Neil Martin. Neil was making his
first appearance at an event outside of Croydon.
QP
has undergone a lot of changes in recent months and TD Jesse Denny was
keen to test all players to the max. The competition was to be played
over 4 rounds, with no final and split over the “new” course – including
extended holes and two new holes deep in the woods, familiar to CDGC
from the Hyzer cup, and the “old” course on its original layout.

Nationals 2010
They think it's all over; well, it really is now. The BDGA touring season drew to a chilly close over the weekend of October 24th and 25th with the Top 16 match-play event alongside the Not the Nationals competition hostedby Quarry Park. Jester Wilson and Bruce Webber qualified by right for the event but with attendance levels being poor Am Champion Rich Wood as well as CDGC's Dan Ryan and Phil Wood were present and hoping to not just make up the numbers. The Not the Nationals this year was made up of a one day stroke-playcompetition on the Saturday, which then created the seedings for a day of match-play on the Sunday. Croydon Cyclone Ad Am Champ Tom Lowes was joined by Stew Gudgeon representing CDGC in this format.

SF DISC GOLF
Newly in from our West Coast Correspondent, Tim Emmott regales us with his first SF DG outing. The elder of the wood bros asked me to write a few words once in a while about the Californian disc golf scene.
So first up to bat is San Francisco Golden Gate Park Disc Gol Course or SFGGPDGC:-) for the texters.

As the squeaking of the my bike pedals ceased to be drowned out by the plethora of trucks, sedans and low riders I know I have made it to the famous goldengate park. A few squeeks more and the gentle clink of chains begins to dust the air, my hairs begin to stand on end excitement akin to that of a kid at christmas.
I had made it. Legs like jelly. Arms like noodles, the first tee awaits.

BDGA Site down - Forum seems to be safe
Further to previous advice, the bdga main site has now been taken down. The forum is still up and running, it seems to be safe and can be accessed here. www.bdga.org.uk/forum/
The Cyclone brings a successful Finn to the end of the season.
Croydon Disc Golf Club and Tournament Director Jester Wilson hosted the final BDGA tour event of the season over the weekend of 25th/26th September. With a total of 63registered players travelling in from as far afield as Canada, Finland and Crinklewood, and a total of 25 CDCG players in total in the field, the locals were determined to show the tourists how it was done. CDGC has always used the Cyclone as a chance to blood new players into competition golf and this event was no different; Louie Webber, Ola Johansson and Simon Willmore all entering into their first tour event. The Cyclone was shaping up to match the successes of previous years.

Burnlaw : Not Enough Caddies

If there is one tournament eagerly anticipated on the BDGA tour, its the Burnlaw Autumn Equinox. The course is a challenging par 57 with a good mix of wooded, open, lefty, righty, up and down holes, with plenty of OB’s to bump up the scores. But, the golf is really an excuse to explore one of the most beautiful parts of our little green Isle.
